SERIOUS CHARGES.
A SCHOOLMASTER INVOLVED. By Ttlegru*—Press AssncJatioe Timaru, Last Night. At Temuka to-day, before Mr. MosJey, SAL, David Thomas Todd (56), a echoolmaster, of Claudeboye. was charged with carnal knowledge and four indecent assaults on a school girl 13 to 14 years of age, and similar charges in -e--spect of another girl of the same age between August 1 and October 6. The criminal assaults on the girl*, it was alleged, took place in a spare classroom while the school was in session and the indecent assaults when the girls were in class in school. The girls gave clear evidence of the major acts. Accused’i precautions prevented direct corroborative evidence, but numerous boys and girls testified to frequent act* of indecency towards the girls in class. A medical witness testified that both the girls had been criminally tampered ’"Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial on each of nine charges. He will appear at the Supreme Court at Timaru in February next Bail was fixed at £3OO and a surety of £3OO was forthcoming.
