ELTHAM.
CYCLE AND ATHLETIC CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) October 26. A meeting of the above was held at Mr. Nuttall’s shop on Tuesday evening, when Mr. W. S. Heyes presided over a good attendance. It was decided to apply to tae Eltham Borough Council for a picture benefit to be held at an early date. A letter from the Taranaki centre, refusing to grant the (Eltham Club the Taranaki Championship, was read by the secretary, and it was decided to write to the N.Z. Council, protesting against the unfair action of the Taranaki centre. Arrangements were made for a road race from Eltham to Aw.atnna and back, to he held on Thursday, December 1. The I following prizes were offered:—First, bicycle valued at £l7 10s. presented by I Messrs. Hope. Gibbons and Co., of Weljlington; second. £6; third, £-3- 10s; fourth, £3; fifth. £1 10s; sixth, £1; fastest time, gold medal; fastest time for competitors 19 and under, silver medal. A lengthy programme was arranged for the club’s sports on Boxing Day.
A suggestion was made to hold “scooter racee” for children during the interval between the start and finish of the road races, and it was decided to give this a trial on the day of the Awatuna road race.
At the last meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, it was decided to write to the postmaster (Dr. Holt), expressing appreciation of his valued services rendered the chamber and the town, and wishing him success in his new position. The chairman reported that he had arrangements well in hand for the. quarterly meeting, when addresses would be given by various speakers on matters of interest.
