THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S VISIT.
The visit of the Governor-General and Lady Jellicoe to Western and Northern Taranaki is an eveht of special interest to the people of these parts, for more than one reason. He is the representative of the King, and as such commands the loyalty and regard of all loyal New Zealanders; he represents the beneficient constitution under which we Jive and flourish; he is the connecting link with the Old Country. This high and responsible position alone would entitle him to the respect and affection of Colonials; but Viscount Jellicoe has other claims. Who in this far-flung unit of the Empire will ever forget his services during the war? It is no mere figure of speech to affirm that the destinies of the British Empire—the greatset Empire the world has known—indeed, the destinies of the civilised world, were in his hands in the most critical period of its history, and to his skill, courage and resource is largely due the fact that Britain end her Allies triumphed in the end, and Germany, callous, cruel and confident, was humbled to the dust. The British Navy stood between civilisation and slavery, and at the head of the Navy stood the man we honor and welcome in Taranaki to-day. It. is a real privilege, therefore, to have him and Lady Jellicoe with us, and to extend to them all the hospitality within our power. Taranaki is not the least loyal part of the Dominion; when the call came its manhood did its duty, and, as the Governor-General was reminded yesterday, suffered like other districts. The province has different' characteristics to most other parts of New Zealand he has seen, and there can be no doubt but that he will be greatly interested in his visit here. Unfortunately his stay is all too brief, it being impossible for him to see on this occasion but the chief places of interest and attraction. We hope, however, he will carry away such pleasant memories of his visit that he may be tempted to return at no distant date, when he will be assured, as on the present occasion, of the heartiest of welcomes.
