Karl's troops were practically encircled, and many captured. The Hungarian Government has announced that there is no further likelihood of military action, as Kart is without prospect of strengthening his forces. The Government has demanded Karl’s

Hungary, pending the decision of the Allies, final abdication on behalf of self and his son, and also the court-martialhng of his military and political advisers. According to an unconfirmed report the losses among Karlist troops in the battle of Komom amounted to several hundred killed and a thousand wounded. Karl himself had difficulty in escaping capture after the battle. It is stated he attempted to arrange an armistice, but this was refused, except under conditions laid down hv the Government.

A CRITICAL STATE. TROOPS UNRELIABLE. London, Oct. 24. The latest official news received in London states that Kariist troops approached Budapest but were driven back. Fresh troops are arriving and encircling the town, which is strengthening its defence. Matters are critical. Earlier in the day the Foreign Minister admitted pessimistically that troops on both sides refused to’fire on each other. The lower classes oppose Karl’s return, but the middle classes appear to favor him. ALLIES REQUEST EXPULSION. GOVERNMENT WILLING. Paris, Oct. 24. The Ambassador's Conference has instructed the Allied representatives at Budapest to ask the Government to proclaim antagonism to Karl and arrest and expel him. Unless thia is done the Allies decline ail responsibility. Admiral Horthy has promised to do Iris utmost to arrest Karl. London, Oct. 24. In the House of Commons, Mr. Loyd George, replying to a question, said that the attitude of the Allied Governments was firmly opposed to the restoration ut the Hapsburg dynasty to the Hungarian throne. The Hungarian Government had replied that it would conform to the desires of the Allied Governments and the necessary steps would be taken to secure Karl’s removal from the country. The information from rhe Hungarian Government was that the situation waa steadily improving and order waa being maintained in Budapest.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

REGENT’S PROCLAMATION. Budapest, Oct. 24. Admiral Horthy has issued a proclamation to the National Army declaring that only the Regent can authorise the transfer of power to his Majesty Charles IV., and to do so at the present would mean ruin to the country. Therefore, he expects all members of the National Army to remain faithful to their oath to him and to obey orders unconditionally.—Reuter. NEIGHBORING STATES IN ARMS. Paris, Oct. 24. Advices from Budapest state further contingents of Government troops have gone over to the Monarchists. Karl’s entry into Budapest will be regarded as a casus belli by Czecho-Siovakia, whose army is ready to march. The Government has received an assurance that Serbian and Roumanian forces will march against Hungary at the first signal. The Serbo-Hungarian frontier has been closed and Serbian troops are marching to the frontier.—Aus.-N.Z. Uabie Asan. ITALIAN COMPLICITY DENIED. Paris, Oct. 24. In reference to statements that Karl’s coup was inspired by Italy’s proMagyar policy, the Italian Embassy emphatically denies the existence of an agreement between Hungary and Italy with a view to the restoration of Karl, or that Italy is a party to any agreement directed against other Powers.— Aus.-N-Z.
