BUTTER AND CHEESE.

INCREASE IN PRODUCTION. BUTTER MORE THAN DOUBLE. TARANAKI FIGURES. The confidence expressed by those connected with the dairying industry that the favorable spring weather would result in a big filip to production is fully confirmed by the figures relating to the amount of butter and cheese received in store. Owing to the exceptionally mild weather during the early spring dairying commenced under very favorable conditions, and factories generally recorded increasing outputs daily as compared with last season. The quantity of butter received at the Taranaki Producers’ stores/ Moturoa, up till October 21, was 38,200 boxes, compared with 15,800 at that date last year. Some allowance has to be made for the fact that a number of companies have chosen to manufacture butter instead of cheese this season, but in spite of this the figures indicate that there is a bigger production. While cheese shows a decrease, this is more than balanced by the big rise in the other branch of the industry. At October 21 11,700 crates had been sent into the stores, as against 19,100 in the 1920 period.' As showing the general trend of production this year, it may be stated that the average weekly quantities now being received are 6000 boxes of butter and 3000 crates of cheese. At the same time last year the figures stood at about 2000 boxes of butter and 4000 crates of cheese.

Regular shipments are going forward for the Home markets, which is very helpful to the producer, as over-storage is obviated. At the end of this week the Corinna will load 13,800 boxes of butter and 3500 crates of cheese for transhipment' to the Remuera at Wellington. Space has also been allotted on the Tainui (loading at Wellington on November 12) for all available butter and 5000 crates of cheese. This will also go by coastal boat from New Plymouth.
