CORRESPONDENCE.

SHORT WEIGHT OR MEASURE. (To the Editor.) Sir, —If the milkman gives short measure, or if the baker gives short weight, the inspector soon br : ngs him before the court of justice. Why does not the inspector see that petrol users get their measure? It is bad enough to have to pay a very high price, but if you don’t get measure, well, 1 call it adding insult to injury. I would advise users of petrol to measure some tins which do not leak, and then when it comes to the notice of our Government.—l am, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO. Hawera, Oct. 6. DR. BARNARDO’S HOMES. (To the Editor.) ■Sir, —Mrs. Massey visited last month the Girls’ Village Home, of 60 acres, where the first Cottage Home in the world was built, and the Boys’ Garden City where New Zealand House is—these being just two of the 60 branches of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes —and she very kindly consented to be the president of the “New Zealand Penny League,” as also Mrs. Meighan to be the president of the “Canada Cent League.” The Australian Penny League is now well established, and Mies Mabel Cameron, one of my co-workers, reports that they have established a Barnardo Home in Sydney and floated an appeal for £ 100,000, and more than £6OOO is already contributed to the Australian Penny League. Tasmania has also got the League well started, and Miss Cameron is now organising Victoria and intends doing the other States shortly. I leave myself shorty to establish the League in Newfoundland, and then the “Canada Cent League,” and as it is not possible to reach New Zealand for some considerable time, I am sending this appeal in the hope that you will send some immediate help as we urgenty need money. It would be most encouraging if your gift could reach us before the end of December as a Christmas gift, and it would greatly cheer me in my work in the other countries while on my way to you, to know I hud your prayers and practical co-operation. Will you cheer me by sending gpod news to Scarborough which will be forwarded, and in my travels I can rejoice because the “New Zealand Penny League” will be started at the same time as the “Canada Cent League,” and more because you have sent some help towards feeding and clothing our family, the largest one in the world. —I am, etc., EFFIE BENTHAM. London, 1 2th August.
