A MURDERER’S ESCAPE.
HOW MATTHEWS GOT AWAY. ASSISTANCE SUGGESTED. By Telegrach —Press Association. Wellington Last Night. The Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister in charge of mental hospitals) has instituted an inquiry into the circumstances under which Reginald Matthews escaped from Seaclifl Asylum. The escape was effected under extraordi* nary circumstances. It it possible, though it is not definitely ascertained who helped him, that one of the patients cleaning the corridor placed the blade of a knife into the cell. None of the attendant® wouh have assisted, as they alj knew Mat thews was insane. There was n doubt Matthews had with him in the cell souk sharp instrument. Dr. Hay holds that it is impossible to guarantee that some person will not escape, though every means will be taken to prevent a repetition. Such persons should not be in a mental hospital, and he favors the erection of a building to accommodate criminal lunatics.
