HARBOR BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. ’Hie New Plymouth Harbor Board met yesterday. There were present: Messrs. E. Maxwell, C. E. Bellringer, C. A. Wilkinson, C. R. Burgess, J. S. Connett, and C. E. McGuinness. In the absence of the chairman (Mr. Newton King), Mr. Maxwell presided. Apologies for absence were also received from Messrs. J. McCluggage and D. J. Hughes. HARBOR MASTER’S REPORT. Captain Waller, harbor master, reported that for the four weeks period ending on the 6th, inst., 12 vessels entered the port, the aggregate tonnage being 22,698 tons. The imports amounted to <5814 tons and the exports to 1887 tons, making a total of 8701 tons. The government, landed 3344 tons of coal. The Shaw Savill liner Kia Ora arrived on July 16 from Wellington. She loadded 1480 tons of frozen meat, etc., and sailed on the 24th for Wanganui. The U.S.S. Company’s Waitomo from Newcastle, via Napier, landed 4037 tons of coal. In a supplementary report the harbor onaster stated that a gale of exceptional severity lasting from August. 1 to August 6, had been, experienced. The seas were very high, and the spring tides high, being backed up by the far fetched westerly winds. At high water on the 4th and sth the breakwater was almost submerged. Members of the board remarked that it was a very satisfactory feature to note that 1 iu spite of the severe weather encountered last week the damage sustained at the wharf and breakwater was comparatively trivial. HARBOR WORKS. The resident engineer (Mr. G. W. Baxter Lowson) reported as follows for the period, July 11 to August 6:— Dredging.— The . Paritutu re-commenced dredging on July 27, after the completion of the annual overhaul. Unfortunately heavyseas prevented her working for more than a few days during the remaining portion of the period, her output being 4000 tons of sand from the third fairway cut. General.—The line to the new quarry is in an advanced stage of construction. Heavy seas last week somewhat disarranged, the parapet blocks on the breakwater, doing some slight, damage to our rolling stock, sheltering in their lee. The waterside workers’ shed was also damaged. Wharf maintenance and other general work has been attended to during the month.
