Mr. J. B. RouTston has been appointed general instructor at the New Ply. mouth Technical College. Mr. A, L Humphries left for Auckland by the mail train yesterday morning.
M,r. Frank Ardern, well-known in Stratford, is at present seriously ill in New Plymouth.
A London correspondent * wrtes: —Mr. TL G. Dickie, of Waverley, who has been for some time in England, returns in August to the Dominion. Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, medical inspector of schools, left New Plymouth for Wanganui yesterday. A New York cablegram says that Mr. Douglas Edgar, a well-known golfer, was killed at' Atlanta by being struck by an automobile.
Mr. Fraser Smith, president of the Waikato Coursing Association, arrived in New Plymouth lest night by the mail train in order to be present at the Taranaki Cup meeting, which opens tomorrow.
Mr. F. Naisinith, of Patea, leaves by the Manuka for Sydney. Mr. Naismith, accompanied by Mrs. Naismifh, intends spending about six weeks in holidaymaking in Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmania.
Mr. Jas. McLeod, president of the New Zealand Rugby Union, left for Wellington by the mail train yesterday morning en route to Dunedin, where he will be present at the first test match against the Springboks.
Mr. F. J. Hill, who has been on tour with the New Zealand bowlers, leaves England on the 24th inst. for New York. He will visit Niagara Falls and then cross to Vancouver to catch the Niagara, which leaves on September 10, so he expects to return to New Plymouth about the end of September. Mr. A. E. Wiggins, manager of the Taneatua ('Bay of Plenty) branch of the Bank of New Zealand for the past eight years, has been appointed manager of the Opunake branch and has taken up his duties there. Mr. Wiggins was in the Opunake office some eighteen years ago.
The tragically sudden death occurred at Wellington yesterday of Mr. William S. Espie, a well-known |Vellington resident, traveller for Johnston and Co. He had entered the vestibule of the Commercial Travellers’ Club and died while talking to some friends. The cause of death was heart failure. — Press Association.

General Sir Andrew Russell and Lady Russell celebrated their silver wedding on Thursday, and received many congratulations from friends assembled at Tunanui. At- last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth Returned Soldiers’ Association, it was decided to send a message of congratulation to MajorGeneral Sir Andrew Russell and Lady Russell on the occasion of their silver wedding. “That a letter of congratulation he sent to Colonel Meldrum on his appointment to the magistracy,” was the wording of a resolution carried at last night’s meeting of the New Plymouth R.S.A. executive. Regret at the loss that will be sustained to the town and local returned soldiers by the departure of Colonel Meldrum will also be expressed in the letter. A telegram from Wellington flays advice has been received that Mr. H. W. Laver, manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Wellington, has been appointed acting-inspector, vice the late Mr. B. C. Molineaux. Mr. A. J. McKay, late assistant-inspector, has been appointed acting-manager at Wellington.
