LONDON UNEMPLOYED.
RIOT AT TIMBER YARD. SERIOUS FIRE STARTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, August 8. Serious rioting occurred at Gliksten’s timber-yard in East London. It is the largest timber-yard in England, and 5000 unemployed, many of whom waited all night long, came in response to an advertisement for 50. They were so angered at the failure to secure work that they broke the gates and raided the offices. Police and mounted men were summoned from the surrounding stations until they were 500 strong. They forced the men out of the gates, but some hours after the riot was quelled the yard caught fire and etocks worth £1,000,000 are threatened with total destruction. The yard covers 21 acres, which is a blazing inferno. Received August 9, 5.5 p.m. London, August 8. •Mr. Gliksten has informed the Press that unemployed were totally unconnected with the fire. The outbreak commenced on the Lea canal side, which was not attainable by the unemployed. The damage at Gliksten’s fire is authoritatively estimated at ,£250,000.
