GOVERNMENT ECONOMY.

ITS NEED STRESSED. At a meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon, the need for the exercise of economy on the part of the Government was stressed by several speakers, who contended that the Government should set an example at this time of heavy taxation and reduced business, and not continue to employ hands for whom there is no work. Credit was given the Railway Department for making a commencement, and cutting its clothes according to the cloth available, and the hope expressed that no heed would be taken by the Government of the clamor in certain districts, especially in the South Island, affected by the reduction of unpayable train services. The ’following motion wasi passed:“That this Chamber, viewing with anxiety the heavy taxation and the irtcreasing cost of government, welcomes the decision to effect economies in the railways and other departments, and urges that political and local influences should not be permitted to turn the Government from its purpose of economising in every possible direction.”
