LATEST LONDON REPORT. FALL IN CHEESE AND CASEIN. Mr. Maurice Nathan, one of the managing directors of Joseph Nathan, Ltd., who is at present in New Plymouth, yesterday received the following cable advice from London: “New Zealand white cheese, 108 s to 110 s; colored, 100 s to lOGts; the market is greatly influenced by the price of Canadian cheese, both spat and c.i.f. Spot Canadian is 96s to’ 100 s, and c.i.f. 86s to 88s. Tlie Imperial Government’s New Zealand butter is quoted at 1925; Australian, 170 s; and Argentine, 1525; but, owing to a good Continental demand, Danish ie firm at 200 s to 2065.” A further cable received by Mr. Nathan says there is a big drop in the casein market. New Zealand casein is quoted at 45s to 555, and French (rennet casein) is only worth 7(te, compared with 1606 last October. Speaking to a Daily News representative, Mr. Nathan said the slump in cheese could be looked upon as being due to two reasons. Firstly, there was groat unemployment in Britain, due to the strike, thus reducing the purchasing power of the people; and, secondly, the British housewife knew what was the cheapest food to give her children. Owing to the big slump in meat the price of cheese Aras bound to fall, and Mr. Nathan emphasised that the price of cheese would continue to be ruled by that of bacon, meat, etc. Referring to the fall in casein, Mr. Nathan said this was due to the closing of big manufacturing works owing to the lack of coal, and even at the existing low prices there was no demand. The only hope was that the strike would isoon bo settled, putting the industries in full swing again, and bringing about a revival.
