THE STRATFORD RAILWAY.
RELIEF FOR UNEMPLOYED. APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT. The position regarding unemployment in New Zealand and the question of placing unemployed on important public works, Was discussed at Tuesday nighl’s meeting of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce (writes our Stratford correspondent). Mr. W. P. Kirkwood moved: “That strong recommendations be made to the acting-Prime Minister and the Minister for Public Works, that with the view of the early completion of the ballasting of the Tahora section of railway, facilities be expedited for the taking over oL that section of railway by the Railway Department; also that the Government be urged to relieve unemployment by pushing on the construction of the railway tunnels at Tahora.” In speaking to the motion, Mr. Kirkwood said that notwithstanding that unemployment. was general throughout New Zealand the Government was putting oft" men from the Tahora-Stratford railway. He said that the natural outlet from the districts the line would open Up was the port of New Plymouth and the success of that port as a deep sea harbor was beyond doubt. The motion was carried unanimously.
The death occurred at Manaia on Tuesday of Mr. Ernest Vine, at the age of 57 years. For very many years he had been a resident of Manaia, and was well-knowh and respected up and down the coast.
