Dynamite sufficient to blow New York City off the map was discovered on what is known as Buckwheat Island, a small stretch of marsh land in a secluded part of the harbor off the New Jersey shore. The discovery was made by two boys, who, while crabbing in the swamp, came across a small, low and dilapidated hut in which were eight boxes containing sticks of dynamite. They told the New Jersey police, who communicated with the New York Bureau of Combustiles. Investigation by officials has failed to explain the presence of the explosive, and the theory is held that it was stored by anarchists working in shipbuilding and other plants round about. It is also thought that the Wall Street explosion may have been caused by dynamite taken from this secret store. Twenty-eight sticks of the explosive had been removed from the topmost box.
