French opinion regards it an deep ingratitude to tho maker of a greater Greece. Tt largelv .surprised Athens itself, where the Bourse is closed, fearing a panic. M. Rallis, the new Premier, is a Royalist, and is credited with feeing proEntente, though he hates M. Venizelos more than he likes the Allies. The real master of the situation is M. Gounaris.
A Lucerne message states that there are rejoicings in ex-King Constantine's camp. Constantino received telegrams from Athens announcing "the downfall of the tyrant," and partisans at Geneva celebrated the victory,—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
SHOOTING IN ATHENS. EX-KING SEES HIS THRONE AGAIN. Received Nov. 17, 8.5 p.m. Athens, Nov. 17. Irritation over the long continued demobilisation of the army was a big factor' in M. Venizelos' defeat. There was firing in the streets of Athens, particularly in Constitution [ Square, where the opposition newspapers established their headquarters, soldiers firing in platoons upon the building, and Royalists replying until a panic took place in the district.' General voting in Smryna and Thrace was strongly in M. Venizelos' favor, but the latter declares he will resign and leave Greece. According to a Geneva telegram exKing Constantino states he is not surprised. "It means my early return to the throne," he added.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. VENIZELOS RESIGNS-. London, Nov. 16.
