Auckland, Last Night. There was a mix-up . at the start of the Maiden Plate, and about ten of tne contestants indulged In a contest the * full length of the course from a false start. On that occasion Guerre a' Mort, Khan, and Octoplete were placed by the pudge, but the starter ordered no start, and in the second despatch Regent, a four-year-old son of Marble Arch and Kakama, won the- stake from Stork (Gray), who met with some interference at the home bend. There was a protest, but the judge's placings were allowed to stand, with Paonul third. The Grey Lynn Hurdles proyeC a good thing for the Gisborne candidate Cymer, whom Henderson always tad in front, over, the last round going very easy. Sir Agnes and Keystone filled the places. The former may do better very shortly* Hereon© flcishe'd fourth. Hermfn, ridden by Gray, in the Avondale Stakes, proved a goocl thing for that event. He is one of Mr. ,w. G. Stead's team, end Is likely to do much better. He is by Absurd—Sea Elf. He allowed Oranga and Lady Violet to lead into the straight, and then put in some speedy paces, and won from Lady Violet, who was unfortunate in meeting such a classy customer. Martial Dawfe was fourth. Despite the fact that Glen Canny was said tc be under a cloud of late, he stripped well for tfce Avondale Cup. Glen Canny was always out in front, being attended by Landelide for the most part. However, the latter died out over the business'end, and Gazique made, a big effort to score, but Glen Canny fought the issue out gamely and won creditably, with Woody Glen third and Alteration, who was finishing well on, a good fourth Marqueteur was evidently not at his best here, though 80-Peep was noticeable at one stage. First Call, in the Hitck and Hunters' Steeplechase, could only finish third to Coro' glen and Ivoura. The winner is an inmate of tte Uncle Ned stable, and is by Glen Albyn from Scotch Lady, He should be serviceable in better company later In the season. Daloopin, a son of Rohepotae, gave a great exhibition out in front for, a time, hut lost 1 his rider when he made a false jump at the second last fenceThe Henderson Handicap, for apprentice riders, went to Tainaroa. Escaped had the lead into the straight, when Glover pushed Taimaroa through, and he won from an outsider in Gold Plane, wl:o was finishing on very well. Geoffrey was an honest third, and Escaped fourth. The victory of Actrice in the Hack Welter appeared to be well received/ for his owner, a steward ofc the Rarawa, is popular. The daughter of Marble Arch is trained by the ex-New Plymouth mentor, B. Jury, who was confident she would run well, and benefited accordingly. Militaire looked up in front before Starlight at the entrance, but failed to see the distance out when Bitholia and Actrice fougl't out an interesting finish.»Kinkora was third, and Militaire fourth. The latter should benefit by the race and over a shorter course can be looked for. Sam Henderson, who rode Actrice, steered Some Boy II when he returned over half a century at the corresponding meeting last year. Gray's mount Delight was pounced upon as a good thing for the Flying Stakes, but. in i (he heavy rain and sodden track there was some excuse for her defeat into fourth place. King Abbey's colors were in front in tL-e middle stages, but in the straight the lightweight Arran forged to the front, and won nicely from Emerald Hill, who is still eligible for hack company, and Crowhurst, with Delight next. Delight may do a lot better when the going is firm, while King Abbey will benefit by the race. NAPIER PARK ACCEPTANCES. Napier, Last Night. (By "Moturoa,") The Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting which opens at Raatfwlck on Saturday, promises to be brimful of Interest to New Zealanders, but Gloaming's withdrawal and the poor form exhibited by the Ijerby candidate Vespucci at Roaehill have 'robbed the gathering of mucin of its attraction. Still, there ard a fair number of New Zealand-bred horses engaged, and the doings of Finraark, Vespucci, Dewdrop, Fluency, Forward Lady, and others will be keenly watched. The defection of such good horses as Gloaming, Wolaroi, and Richmond Main, and the lameness of Chrysolaus Avill detract from the importance of the galhering, but with Poitr.el, Kennaquahair, Greenstcad, Sydney Damsel, Lingle, Prince Virdls, Millieme, Remmon, and the Derby crncks Strathredole, Syce Knight, Erasmus, and Wirraway .engaged racing should be first-class. . At latest advices, Strathredole is a firm favorite for Saturday's Dejrby, with Syce Knight, Wirraway and Erasmus next in demand. For the Epsom Handicap," Remmon is a very warm order, and one scribe refers to him as "a paper certainty." Mont 'Frisco, Greenatead, and Cliryaolaus also have backers for tho Epsom. Finmark's Tecent victory has caused him to advance to the head of quotations for the Me/tropolitan Handicap, hut Kennaquhair, White Phast, PersL'ore and Millieme also have big followings. Considering the big money offered for hurdlers and steeplechasers it is a wonder some of the "guns" from the Dominion were not sent across. •

Vespucci's defeat in the Rosehill Guineas has caused Sydney scribes to modify their opinions of the Varco colt as a likely Derby winner, and they now maintain that lie had a lot of luck when fce beat Syce Knight at Randwick. At Rosehill, Wirraway is said to have been favored with the best run, and qlthough he heat Syce Knight decisively, both Strathredole and Erasmus were overhauling him at the finish. Latest training reporis credit Strathredole with finishing up strongly at the end of a mile and three furlongs, and his prospects of seeing out a mile and a half appear brightest.

The Geraldine R.C. spring meeting opens to-day, and will conclude on Saturday. On recent form Trentham Rose and Warfarin should show up in hurdle events at the meeting. Linden 3 who ran two seconds % at Ashburton, Clean Sweep, Jack Symons and Dutch Courage should all run prominently at the meeting.

The racegoer appears to be considered * ( fair game' by the authorities iu the various fcamlets on the main roads on race days. In the little town in which this scribe hangs out his sign, the somnolent town board commissioners wero very wide awake on Saturday last, the occasion of the WangamU races, hut of the hundreds of cars that floated through the town not more than a dozen covered the measured "quarter" in time exceeding 15 miles per hour. The next flay (Sunday) dozens of cars dashed through at from 25 to 45 miles an hour, hut the commissioners were not in pvidonco. No doubt the motorists were in i hurry to get to church, anyhow.

In commenting on th 6 whip incident alleged to have occurred during tfce running of the Wtilfeanae Handicap at Awapuni, a southern scribe suggests that stewards should be relieved of duties which tie them to the vicinity of the stands and enclosures, and thus leave them free, to watch the racing more closclj*. This is not a new idea. In fact this paper has contended for many years that stewards—and particularly the 'stipes" should view the racing from point of vantage near the track, and not from the stewards' stand. It is wonctyrful the difference the presence of a steward or two at the barrier or at a bend will 'make. Some years ago a friend of mine ,put a lot of nioney on a horse, which we will call Blanker, ridden by a crack horseman whom v*e will call Smith. After the totalisator closed my frleiul learned that Blanker was rt ln the bag," but. he was quick to act, find immediately hied himself to the homo turn. Blanker got away well, and in spite of the efforts of Smith was running third, hal-ri held and half strangled, ns they came to the Jast bend. The-n my pel rushed out into the middle of the track, "Let him go, Smith; let him go, I tell you, or I'll put you out for life/' Smith's jaw dropped, and immediately Blanker shot forward and won easily. We got quite a good dividend too.
