THE YVAITIRI ROAD. Sept. 29. ->Tr. I!. Masters, M.P., Jias received the following reply from the. Minister of Public Works in reference to his repre- J Mentations for the opening up of the Waitiri Road at Puniwhakau:— "In reply jo your representations, j have to state that both land owners; all'ecled by this deviation have now signed agreements as to the compensation to be paid. Steps are to be taken to protect the interest of the Crown under the agreements, and instructions have been issued to the District Engineer to proceed with the construction of the road-" This will mean the opening up of a read whereby ail the trade both in and out of the Oinoana district will go through Douglas. , GENEKAL. The ladies who had helped at the recent Fire Brigade Ball, were entertained by the members of the brigade at a social evening liekl in the Parish Hall last night. There was a good attendance of the ladies and their friends, and a moat enjoyable time was spent in dancing. Mr. ,I'. Aitken acted as M.C. The music in tho early portion of the evening was supplied by Miss 0. Taylor, and afterwards by Lester Bros.' orchestra of seven instruments. Supper was provided by the members of the brigade. The long expected supplies of sugar arrived in Stratford to-day and are being j retailed in small quantities. Disappointment is expressed that no white sugar was included in the supply.
The local coal merchants received a rush of order; to-day, owing to the possibility of a general strike amongst the coal miners of the Dominion. The stocks of coal are lower in Stratford at the present time than they have been since the epidemic of 1918, and tlie retailers are reduced to supplying coal in single bags-
Out of three applicants, tlie Works Committee of the Borough Council last niglit appointed Mi'. M. Moroney to tlie position of pound-keeper.
