THE TRAMS.

PROPOSED EXTENSIONS. ORIGINAL PROPOSALS CONFIRMED.. Owing to a niiaunderstanding over the proposals for the tramways extensions during! the discussion at the meeting 6f the New Plymouth Borough Council a fortnight ago, the resolution which was passed on that occasion, authorising the taking of a poll, was again reviewed when the council met last night. Though several new proposals were put forward last night, no alteration was actually made in the original issues. An amendment was moved by Cr. W. J. Hayden, and seconded by Cr. F. J. Hill, in favor of deleting the alternative proposal giving the ratepayers the chance of voting on the trackless system to Vogeltown. This left two issues, namely, the extension of the present syßtem to David Street, and the adoption of the trackless cars for both suburbs. The mover said he was under a misapprehension at last meeting in tabling the motion as then carried. He pointed out that the alteration he now proposed would leave the issue: the present system versus the trackless. Cr. V. Griffiths opposed the amendment,'and said that the companion in the proposed issue was not a fair one. The amendment was !«&,„ ; A further amendment by Crs. Hill and B. Parkin, that ail extra be procured, was loat. .A third amendment was moved by Crs. "W. F. Shisrt and A. S. Brooker, which would have the effect of giving the ratepayers the straight-out issue of voting on the trackless system to Vogeltown and Westown. The voting was equal, the division being:—For: Crs. Collie,'Brooker, Short, and, Griffiths, Against: Crs. Hayden, Hill, Parkin, and the Mayor. The casting vote was in favor of leaving the original motion unaltered, and the amendment was thus lost. An amendment by Crs, Hayden and Hill, that the extension of the trackless system be to Westown only, was also lost. The final result of the discussion was to leave the original motion unaltered, and it was ultimately put and confirmed. This resolution provides for the taking of separate polls of ratepayers upon the following proposals:— No. I.—fa)-The raising of a loan of £2n,000 for the extension : of the overhead system to David Street rvia Morley Street; (b) for 'a loan of £ 18,000 fan? the institution of the jailless system from the-railway station to the junction of the.Carrington and Brooklands roads: - ; No. 2,—Loan of £27,000 fir establishing a raifless system from the railway station to Westown 'and Vogeltown. ... i It was decided that the trackless route to Westown be via Standish Hill.
