RAILWAY LEASES. ■ , A public meeting, convened by the Mayor, will be held in the municipal chambers on Monday evening, to consider the question of obtaining the freehold of the railway reserve facing Broadway central. All interested in this important question are invited to attend. FIRE BRIGADE BALL. The annual ball of the Stratford Municipal Volunteer Fire Brigade, which was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, was a brilliant success in .every respect, and reflected tlie greatest credit on those responsible for organising it. Fully 200 couples were present, ! many in fancy dress, and the members of the Brigade attended in their uniforms. The hall was beautifully decorated with bunting and flowers and shrubs, and on the stage, a design worked with A reel, ladders and hose, added to the decorative effect, two challenge shields held by the brigade being prominently displayed. The decorations at the supper tables w«e particularly fine, the flowers being donated by Messrs. Lester Bros. (Ngaere),'T. G. Grubb, and several ladies. The whole of the work was carried out by volunteers, and the goods for the supper was all contributed by residents of the town. Dancing commenced at 8 o'clock to excellent music provided by Feak's orchestra from Waitara, extras being played by Lester Bros.' orchestra, consisting of Miss Moon (piano), V. Lester (violin), H. Lester (clarionette), and Burmester (cornet). Tie duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Messrs. P. Aitken,.A. S. Davies, R. Leach, and J. Croft. A feature of the evening was the grand parade of the firemen, led by Captain Grubb, and the dancers in fancy dress. The prizes for the fancy dresses were awarded as follows:—Ladies: Best fancy, Miss Baskin (Golliwog); most original, Miss Feaver ("Keep Off The Grass"). Gents: Best fancy, 'Mr. Kivell (Golliwog); most original, Mr. K. Burns (Up-to-date Potatoes). The prizes were donated by Messrs. T. G. Grubb, A. S. Davies, 8. Sharp, and A. Moon, The following is the list of those appearing in fancy dress, with a description of their costumes:—Miss E. Feaver (Keep Off The Grass), Mrs. F. Olliver (Japanese Lady), Miss G. Broadley (Japanese lady), Miss Innes Cjhirso), Miss S. Sole (Chinaman), D. Walker (The Staff of Life), Miss Leech (Spanish Lady), Miss M. Shotter (Three Castles Cigarettes), Miss R. 1 Lawn (Peasant Girl), Miss R. Grubb (Knave of Hearts), Mrs. Hoye (Irish Peasant), Miss I. McKenzie (Dutch Girl), Miss J. Feaver (Night), Miss Shotter (Continuance), Miss J. Kivell (Golliwog), Miss Baskin (Golliwog), Miss Rowe (French Courtier), Miss I. Feaver (Roumania), Miss M. Cormack (Pierette), H. Lloyd (Broken-down Millionaire), Cameron (Nigger), W. Wilson (Soldier), Gernhoefer (Clown), R. Burns (Up-to-date Potatoes), E. P. Black (Bob's Cliner).
THE KING'S CINEMA THEATRE. Wholesome comedy, striking dramatic action, and interesting love story and a very plausable and illuminting expose of spy activities in the army are phases of the stirring production "American Buds," in which Jane and Catherine Lee, the William Fox juvenile stars, will appear at the King's Cinema Theatre, Stratford, to-day. In this pictore play the Baby Grands appear as orphans whose parentage is shrouded in mystery. The story deals with this mystery, and the effect Which it has on the happiness of e* young woman. The scenes are laid in an orphanage and in an army camp, and the principal occupation of Jane and Catherine, as in their previous productions, consists of playing pranks that keep everyone and everything upset.
