RED RUSSIA.
THOUSANDS HOMELESS. CHILDREN LIVE IN WOODS. 9t Telegraph.—Pres» Am—Copyright. Received Sept. 24, 5.5 p.m. Helsingfors, Sept. 22. It is reported that fires are raging in many places in Russia, and tens of thousands of people are homeless in the districts of Tver, Jareslav, Kostroma, Vladimir, Moscow, Riasan, Archangel, Vologda, Viatka, and also in the suburbs of Petrograd. One hundred and fifty people perished in Vologada, and three hundred in Saratov, where twenty-five thousand are homeless. London, Sept. 23. A poignant story of the Russian revolution is told by the American Red Cross. Hundreds of devoted parents in Moscow and Petrograd in the spring of 1918 sent their children for safety to the Urals, but found it impossible to continue sending remittances to the supervisors, nurses, and teachers. Gradually their charges, the children, were abandoned, and many lived naked in the woods on roots and berries, unattended and unprotected.
The American Red Cross in Siberia removed 800, who have now arrived in Europe. The society is searching for the parents, whose fate in most cases is unknown. Others are scattered and long have despaired of again seeing their children.—United Service.
