BEET SUGAR.
A PROFITABLE INDUSTRY. OPENING IN NEW ZEALAND. By Telegraph.—Press Aran.—Copyright. Ihvercargill, Last Night. Mr. J. B. Merrett returned by the Paloona from a visit to Mafia (Victoria) to investigate the sugar beet industry with a view to establishing a refinery in Canterbury. Last year Maffa made a profit of £16,000 from 1551 tons of sugar refined. It takes about eight tons of beet to produce one 'ton of sugar, and Canterbury soil should produce twelve to eighteen tons an acre, so that a five hundred ton per day refinery will require two to three thousand acres of land. A modern refinery would cost in the region of £200,000. New Zealand can become independent of outside supplies. Co-ordinate industries By growing beets Mr. Merrett Bays could be established in the way of a condensed milk factory or fruit preserving works and the by-products are invaluable for stock. Mr. Merrett atates that the industry can be made a success in the Dominion.
