COLORED LABOR.
MAIN BODY MAN'S COMPLAINT. INDIANS ON PUBLIC WORKS. (By Wire.—Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, Last Night. A complaint of a Main Body man, who stated that he was being forced to carry his swag while colored men worked in his own district, was read to the House of Representatives by Mr. A. D. McLeod (Wairarapa). The Minister for Public Works promised to enquire. He said a protest had been made against the employment of a gang of Indians on road-making near Christchurch, but as a matter of fact no other labor had been available at the time, and.the local people had been anxious that the work should proceed quickly. The Indians had worked on a co-operative contract on the same conditions as anybody else ; Mr. Coates added that, he would make inquiries on the point raised by Mr, McLeod. The Indians were British citizens, and he did not care to ask them to suffer any indignity until the policy of the Government as to the number of them to be permitted to remain in New Zealand had been determined.
