SUGAR IN A WEEK.

After the men had been selected for work at "the Chelsea, sugar refining work* yesterday morning, those among them who had made contributions to the employees' provident fund were hiuided back their contributions. A total of over £IOOO was returned in sums ranging from £IQ up to . £BO. Explaining the position this morning, the works manager said that the men had had the money returned to them because they had left the service, If they were reinstated as members of the fund, it would be 'by the grace of the trustees of the funds. - The workers themselves controlled the fund. Regarding operations at; the works, Mr. Campbell said that they were In lull swing, but .that the normal output trould not be attained for a weak, or until the whole place was got going.. The men only started to malt sugar at midnight last night. ■ They would be in full swing in regard to the production of fine sugar within a week. Thsre are about 1000 tons of raW sugar at the works, and the jtfokoia is due here from Flit tomorrow with 1800 tons, and the Rakanoa on Friday with 1 2850 tons., v A special meeting of thai Union has been called for Sunday at--the Trades Hall, when several Labor M.P.'s will be present to elicit information regarding the alleged victimisation of the 14 men and other aspects pertaining to the matter.
