Mr. Roy S. Johnston, secretary of the Wellington Coal Trade Committee, is on a week's tour of the Taranaki district. Mr. Seddon, secretary of the Wanganui Agricultural Association, has recovered from his lengthy indisposition, and has resumed his duties. Mr. Guy Meredith, of Okato, has been appointed overseer to the Taranaki County Council, ijnd will take up his duties on October 1. Colonel R. F. C. Campbell, Secretary to the Treasury, at present 'in England, has been appointed" to act in conjunction with the High Commissioner (Sir James Allen) as representing New Zealand at the International Conference to be held at Brussels on the 25th inst. to discuss financial matters. The Rev. C. Strand, of Opunake, received word last week of the death of his father, Mr. W. Strand, of Lower Hutt. The deceased gentleman, who had reached the ripe age of 82 years, had been ailing for some time and his end was not unexpected. Mr. R. B. Ryder, .headmaster of the. Campbell street School, Palmerston, has been appointed an inspector of schools in the Wanganui Education Board's district. Mr. L. F. de Berry, of Marton, will take his place as chief of staff at Campbell Street. Sir William Meyer has been appointed the first High Commissioner for India in the United Kingdom (says a cable from London). ,This appointment is made under the new Indian Reform Act,' which will bring India nearer to selfgovernment. Sir William, Meyer has been a member of the Viceroy's Council in India for many years, an 3 as Finance Minister he has played an important part in the administration of India. Private advice has been received from Canada that Mr. W. D. Bayley, 8.A., who toured Now Zealand as a prohibition lecturer prior to the April poll last year, and -spoke in Patea, has been elected to the Manitoban Provincial Parliament, in Canada. Mr. Bayley, who is a member of the Labor Party, represents Assiniboia. Miss Maida Hooker, of Hawera, will be going to London in February next to pursue her musical studies at the Royal Academy of Music. She has been studying this year under Mr. Frank Hutchens at the Sydney Conservatorium. He reports that Miss Hooker has made excellent .progress in her work. It is hoped that the Exhibition Scholarship she won some years ago will be available next year.—Star.
