THE MALE CHOIR.
LAST NIGHT'S CONCERT. Before a large audience last evening at the Workers' Social Hall, the second night programme of the ninth concert of the New Plymouth Male Choir Society was presented, and provided a musical entertainment of high quality. The items by the Choir itself were very well received, this being particularly so in the case of the song "Tyrolese Hunters' March." The quartette also came in for a share of the honors. A great favorite was Miss G. Helen (jard'ner, her items being much in demand. This artist again seorcd in the concluding part of the programme with her elocutionary numbers, and eventually the demand for further monologues resulted in Miss Gard'ner re-appearing on three occasions. Mr. Will L. Hay (tenor) was responsible for some fine vocal work in "Lend Me Your Aid," and "Sands o' Wee." He waa associated with Mr. A. B. Maodonald in the duet, "Watchman, What of the Night," and a fine performance was given by these two vocalists.
A decision to repeat the programme this (Thursday) evening, af: the Empire Theatre if arrangements could be made, was announced during an interval in the proceedings by the conductor (Mr. F. W.
G. McLeod). He explained that numbers were unable to gain admission that evening, the committee having decided to discontinue accepting further cash at the door in view of the number of tickets' which had been sold, and the possibility of further ticket holders coming along to gain admission. In order to meet the people, who were thus barred from hearing the concert, the committee had made the decision as stated, the proceeds to be divided between the Choir funds and the Park. In explaining the reason for the Choir's participation in the proceeds of to-night's function, Mr. McLeod stated that the financial position was as yet not very strong; he made an appeal for citizens to join as subscribing members The opportunity was also taken by Mr. McLeod to compliment the visiting vocalists, Miss Gard'ner and Mr. Hay, on the very high standard of their work as shown in the items given during the evening.
Unfortunately, it was subsequently found impossible to make the necessary arrangements for a third recital this evening, so the project had to be reluctantly abandoned.
