A PREACHER IN PETTICOATS.
LADY IN LONDON PULPIT. And now for woman in the Church! "Pulpit assistant" for the last two years at the City Temple, Miss Maude Boyden, a young slight figure in a black frock, white collar and close-fitting cap, has been preaching with great success at one service every Sunday to a crowded congregation (says a London paper). She is a really eloquent preacher, with a passionate interest in all social questions, and throughout her association with Dr. Fort Newton, she has jnade it a practice to attend at her office in the City Temple on two or three days in every week to grant interviews to women seeking her advise and help. Hundreds of women have come to her for consolation and guidance, and by them she will be sorely missed. In addition to preaching, Miss Rovden has conducted many baptisms, and the idea of a woman taking infants into her arms for the dedicatory service has naturally had a great appeal to many mothers. For the future Miss Royden will be associated with Dr. Percy Dearmer in a series of Sunday fellowship services on new lines, the idea being to appeal to people who do not go to church. Part of the scheme is to provide a centre for discussion, and it is intended that music and art shall be brought into the service of religion to a greatly increased extent,
