APRIL TRAFFIC RETURNS. The. New Plymouth tram returns for April show a very satisfactory increase as compared with April, 1919. The increase in revenue from fares amounts to £.i 11 12s 9d, and the increased number of passengers carried is 41,218. The mileage run by the cars is actually 80 miles less. The figures for April. 1920, are:— Main route—Mileage run, 14,973; passengers carried, 153,519; total fares. £I2OO 4s 6d. Morlcy Street route—Mileage ,jun, IGM; passengers carried, 14,850; total fares, £74 7s Id. Combined routes—Mileage run, 16,677; carried 168,189; totftl fares, £1274 Ilk 7d. The tramways engineer reports:-* "When it is remembered that our "traffic, in common with almost all other tramways, is not spread evenly through the running hours, the figures will serve to show the extent to whi'ch the equipment is being stressed, I have, nevertheless, to report an uninterrupted time-table, and nothing very exceptional in the way of maintenance. It will be necessary to place on order almost immediately replacements in the shape of gear wheels, and pinions. These will take approximately nine to twelve months to arrive here, and will be required about that time- The estimated cost for same delivered is approximately £J3O."
