MONTHLY MEETING. The usual meeting of the Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs. E Masters, M.P. (chairman), S. G. Smith M P., H. Trimble, A- Lees, F. Hoskin H. H. Grayling, and P. J. H. The architect, Mr. C. H- Moore, reported as follows: New Work. Opunake (New School). —Progressing well until held up on account of no cement. Tawhiti (New School).—Completed. Marakopa (New School). —Completed. Ohura Junction.—Material now at Ongame, and all arrangements: made to have the school erected immediately the site is settled.

Paraketa. Will be finished shortly. Hawera Technical High School.—We completed marking out the sides for the different sections and foundations marked. We haye also erected a shed for storage, etc. As soon as we can get Hie Opunake School out of hand as far "«! I,? concre ' e work is concerned we shnll be in a position to push on with this work provided we can get enough cement. '

■ Egmont Village (Additions).—A start made and it depends on the Committee obtaining the use of the hall to carry on for three weeks, or the school closing whether we shall be able to contmuc on with the additions.

Lepperton (Residence).—We have completed the new Jmthroom as per grant from the department- Tubs and copper were put in the washhouse, and we had also to renew the two tanks, the old ones being worn out. Repair Work and Sundries. Awatuna.—Painting and general repairs at school and residence completed Auroa.—Painting of portion of schooi roof completed and new out offices erected. Okaiawa.—Painting of roof completed. Ivaponga—Painting repairs receiving attention.

Arawhata.—-The replacing of shelter shed blown over is being attended to. Hurfora.—New out offices have been erected. Plans. Amended plans for proposed new school at Manaia were completed and sent on to the Department. I also cent a copy to the Manaia Committee. Plans for a new school at lioru are also readv.

Makaka (Proposed Kesidence).—l am unable to recommend a five-roomed residence at this school, and owing to a resolution of the Board I would ask to ha\e the matter further considered. The matter of heating the Manaia •temporary building is receiving attention, and will be completed as 1 soon as we can obtain heaters. I went into the matter of further extending the temporary accommodation and concluded there is no necessity to do anything further for some months ahead at least. —Received.

The matter of the site for the Manaia School was referred to Messrs. Lees and Eaves in conference with the Committee. The architect further reported: Drawing attention to the urgent need of acquiring another site for stacking timber on, it being impossible to buy seasoned timber. To carry on properly it was necessary to have more space, and also add a planing machine to the workshop plant to enable the output of all the flooring, rustic and lining required. He suggested the taking of the whole output from a mill, and what was not required could be passed on at cost price.—Received.

INSPECTOR'S REPORTS. | The senior inspector (Mr. A. J. Morton) reported as follows:—Koru: That the school had reached a stage when j money would be wasted in trying to remodel the building. Makaka:' The question of a residence be deferred for further information. Rowan: That the school be extended so as to provide /or two rooms; a residence was necossafv. Waitaanga: The school is held in a small rented hall. He recommended the proposal to clear a site for the school (now standing bush), and erect a building. • Whenuakura: With reference to application for new building, a permanent structure appeared to be necessary, but failing this a "shelter shed" school would serve the purpose temporary. Mirai: The school did not appear to be sufficiently crowded to qualify for a departmental grant. Raauircments at oth»r aohooli were as

follows;—Mokau: Stove worn out, winter coming on. Okau: New blinds badly needed- Matapur, Dwelling leaking. Auroa: A new out office for boys badly needed. Rowan: Seating accommodation taxed to utmost. Midhirst: A partition of infant room, suggested. Hawera: Enamelling of basins, spouting and down pipes, chimney at teacher-* residence, list of requirements handed in. Yvhareroa: Heating apparatus badly required. Okaiawa: Hyloplate for Std. I and 11. Manga toki: New clock required. Arawhata: Fence required to keep cattle away from the building; three extra desks required. Kahui: Gate at roadside in dilapidated condition. Huiakama: New clock required. \ Whangamomona: A few desks required for lower department- West End: Unsuitable site; insufficiency of accommodation in lower department. Te Kiri: Provision of paths to the out offices. Rahotu: Removal of blackberries and ether attention between the playground and horse paddock. Stratford: Walls require provision for the hanging of pictures, etc- Mahoe: Partition required. The various recommendations were adopted, and application is. to be made to the department for a grant to enlarge Rowan School, also for building the Waitaanga School, and for five acres 'of land adjoining the Whenuakura School.

The architect's report as to a partition at Midhirst infant school was adopted, and the requirements mentioned by the inspector, except at Midhirst, Rahotu, and West End, were referred to. the architect. The attention of the Rahotu Committee is to be drawn t.o the inspector's report on the school ground.

Mr. Peach (Normanby), Mr. Thomas (Eltham), ami Ji)iss Laird (Matapu*) were granted leave to attend the grading of teachers conference in Wellington; Miss 11 M. Murphy (Ohangai) leave to study at Gilby's College for sertifieate. Mr. J. Bailie" (Otakeho) was granted eleven months leave.

COMMITTEES' REQUESTS. It was decided that the £l2 10s paid by the Normanby Committee for the old shelter shed be donated to the Committee • towards the coat of fencing the grounds; that the matter of securing a site for an infant school at Hawera, and the erection of a side school be referred to Messrs. Lees and Eaves to report upon; that the Ngaere Committee be informed that the Board does not intend to relinquish its application for a new residence for their teacher; that the Okau committee be granted £5 towards enlarging shelter shed; that the Puranfli Committee be permitted to hang a roll of honor in the school; that the Pihama Committee bo permitted to erect a memorial monument in the school, the site to be arranged with the aid of the agrlcultural instructor; that the Aukopae Committee be granted a subsidy of £2 to £1 for a shelter shed, the grant not to exceed £2O; that the Senior Inspector report on the necessity for a school at Moeaio, and, if favorable, an application be made to the Department for a grant for the erection of a ischool; that the Stratford branch of the School Commit' tees' Association be' informed the Board is doing its best to expedite the erection of the Stratford technical school; that £2 be granted the Tututawa Committee towards repairing fence; that the Board regrets being unable to make a grant to the Koru Committee for cutting down pine trees; that the question of improving the heating at Ohura School be reported upon by the architect, and the Committee asked for an estimate of cost of asphalting the grounds; that the Lincoln Committee be requested to stake f'he proposed area for asphalting, and to have the track through the grounds made passable. The following matters were referred to the architect: Oeo—dividing curtain. Stratford Technical School—renovations. Piiverlea—extra windows (power to act), Kaimata—windows and repairs. Okaliukura—stove. Whakamara—stove (power to act). Obura—chimneys. Lincolndesks. Rawhitiroa—drainage. Huiakama—heating. Waitara—heating, Messrs. Lees and Eaves reported on the proposed boundaries between the Tawhiti and Hawera school districts and recommended that the decision of the two committees concerned should be adopted, and that the election of a committee be confirmed.—Adopted.

GENERAL. The action of the following committees in closing schools owing to influenza was confirmed:—Huiroa, Dudley, Kina, Oaonui, Makaka, Kawhitiroa, Egmont Village, and Kahui. The secretary was instructed to appty to the Wanganui Board for school district boundaries.

In connection with the proposal to start a library for the use of the Board's teachers, Messrs:. Trimble and White were deputed to consult with the Senior Inspector and the Teachers' Institute, and to report to the next meeting of the Board.

The resolution passed at the last meeting accepting the resignation of Miss kecrup (Niho Niho) was rescinded. It was decided that the matter of providing accommodation for assistants, on account of the acute shortage of houses, be brought to the attention of the Minister on his visiting the district. The secretary was instructed to procure the rates for insuring the children under the jurisdiction of the Board against accidents.

The Opunnke Committee was authorised tn close the school for mid-winter holidays from June 7 to 14 inclusiveThe Hawera Committee is to be informed that the Board considers it inadvisable to move the school gardens this year.

With reference to the application of Mr. .T. A. Huld (Egmont Village) re payment of his full salary while he was detained at Wellington, the Board regretted inability to accede, the responsibility being one for the Department. permission to use part of the school ground for grazing, was referred to the chairman, with power to act. A circular letter was read from the ■New Zealand Educational Institute, propounding a number of questions rela've to the eflect of moving pictures on -■l]ool children, and asking for replies thereto. After a few remarks by Mr. smith, lit was decided that Messrs. bmith, White and Trimble report on tlie matter.

In reply to a communication from the Auckland Board relative to Waitanguru school, it was decided to inform that Board that the Taranaki Board has no objection to the school being erected on the site set apart for it, and agrees to a continuance of administration by the Auckland Board.

It was decided to inform the general manager of railways that the Board considers his department has behaved yery arbitrarily in the matter of demurrage. In the event of the Senior Inspector reporting in favor of additions to the Ackland School, application is to be made to the Department for a grant for same.

The Director of Education wrote Inquiring the position of the amended proposal for increased accommodation at Waitara school—The Department is to be informed that the Board is forwarding a new plan which expresses the Board's opinion as to the requirements at Waitara, and urges that the matter be given the earliest attention. A circular letter was read from the Director of Education relative to the proposed interchange of teachers between Britain land the Dominion.—lt was decided to send a copy of the circular to the Teachers' Institute, and that the Taranaki branch of the Institute be asked to nominate two teachers.

The tender of the Taranaki Herald far printing the Board's annual report was accepted. The Board, in committee, dealt with the matter of a teachers' tenure or office.

Correspondence was read from the Te Roti Committee relative to the reason for resigning office.—Referred to the chairman and Mr- Smith to deal with. The secretary of the Southland, Technical School Teachers' Association forwarded remits concerning school matters. —Deferred till next meeting, to give members of the Board an opportunity to consider same in the interval.

Mr. White was deputed to confer with the Okato Committee re site for teacher's residence.

The Finance Committee's report, recommending that the supply of office stationery be left in Mr. White's hands to deal with, and that the whole question of the Board's building operations be further considered by the Committee, was adopted. Accounts were passed amounting to £9822 17s fid.
