She is getting on in years, and knowing the man and liking him, is plunged into nn ectasy of happiness at the prospect of ending her lonely spinsterhood, But the proposal was intended for her niece, whom she raised from childhood, and when the man returns to claim his bride lie finds himself confronted with a problem as difficult as it is painful. After explanations, he offers chivalrously to marry the aunt, but she refuses, after an affecting scene, and the man goes out to wrestle with the. problem of his future happiness. It is/a difficult subject, skilfully handled/ and the production is an unusual..study of human emotions.
