HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEMES.
LOCAL SCHEMES ENCOURAGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, March 12. A deputation of East Coast local bodies met the Premier, Sir William Eraser, and the Hon. J. G t Coates today to urge the early commencement of the Waikaremoana scheme. Sir William Eraser, replying, said the flhief difficulty was labor. It was not wise to divert labor from other schemes and primary industries. He deprecated opposition to the local schemes at Gisborne, Napier, and Wairoa. These would supply power much earlier than the big scheme and would not interfere with the big scheme when it could be undertaken. Mr. Massey also advised that local schemes should be proceeded with. He admitted the urgency of the scheme to give relief to the East Coast, and said he would consult the Cabinet with regard to placing money on the estimates to commence the development work at Waikaremoana. Members of the deputation offered to find labor within the district and to assist in bringing over hardwood poles, and placing them in position.
