LAND AGENTS' LICENSES.
PROTECTING THE PUBLIC. Te Kniti, March 11. The issue of land agents' licenses, said Mr. Burton, S.M., at Te Kuiti yesterday, would in future he more carefully scrutinised by himself. Jn addition to having eeriilii-atfts of good character, he thought, a magistrate .should be satislied -that applicants should have, a knowledge of ■book-keeping, and lie able to keep trust accounts. In future an applicant for renewal of his license would have to produce a certificate from a qualified accountant showing that applicant's hooks were properly kept, and must bring the books to the Court so that the. .Bench could see that cheques on trust account were not paid into general account. Owing to (lie boom in land.and property new businesses were springing up like mushrooms. People rushed in who had failed at other careers, who had nothing to lose and everything to gain, and who, if they did make a sliu. could fold up their tent=, like Arabs, and silently steal away. The public should be protected, and it was the duty of the Court to take precautions such as he bad suggested.
