Mr. William Creeke, a verv oH resident of Whakatane, died on Wednesday aged 91 yeare. Mr, Frank Amoore, Mayor of Whakatnne, who lias been spending a holiday in Tarnnaki, went north by Hie Rnrnwa last night.
Mr. J. Austin, who recently undervventan operation at the New Plymouth Hospital, is making good progress towards recovery.
The Rev. J. Napier Milne, who has been attending the Methodist Church Conference in Auckland, returned to New Plymouth yesterday morning. Mr. Benjamin F. A cable has .been, received notifying that Miss Alice Cocker, younger daughter of Mr. ami Mrs. 11. Cocker, of New Plymouth, who had a distinguished scholastic and college career, has obtained the degree of MA. wilh honors, within a year of gaining the B.A. Miss Cocker lias received many congratulations on her well merited success.
Capt. Tabu Rhodes, who is supervising arrangements throughout the Dominion in connection with the visit of the Prince of Wales, was in New Plymouth this week and conferred with the Mayor. He left last night, taking a copy of the provisional programme for submission to the Covprnor-fJenernl.
Professor Easfcrficld, tin. director of the Cawthorn Institute, acting with the hoard of trustees, is' gradually assembling round him at Kelson an efficient staff. So far the announced appointments have been "those of agricultural chemist, Mr. Theodore Rk'g; biologist, Dr. E. J. Tillyard: mycologist, Hiss Curtis, of Auckland; and curator, Mr. W. C. Davis, late headmaster of the Cnr-tr.-ton School. 7t is understood that oilier appointments will he made very shortly. . '
The forthcoming retirement of Sergeant Baskiville (of Devonport, Auckland, and formerly of Tarannki) from the police force on superannuation after ■in years' service, the last 10 years of which has been performed, in" Devonport, was mentioned at the last meeting of the Devon port Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. IT. S. \V. King, was authorised to arrange with the various local authorities for steps to he taken to make the sergeant a public presentation in appreciation of his efficient discharge of dulv.
Mr. W. E. Morris, Secretary of the Post Office, has been appointed Chief Public Service Commissioner in place of Mr. Donald Robertson, who is retiring at the end of April on superannuation, his term of appointment having expired (pays a, telegram from Wellington). Mr. F. V. Frazer. who has been ActingAssistant Commissioner, has been eonfirmed in his appointment. A third appointment is to be made. Mr. A D. Thomson, at, present Assistant Commissioner, is retiring" from his oflls? and will nrobably return to the Magistrate's 3eneh.
