WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent). The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. IS. Morgan), Cxs. A. VV. Ogle, JS. C. Jones, O. H. Johnston, J. Blair, and E. Beekbessinger_ A deputation from the Easter Sports Committee, consisting of Messrs J. Bennett and V. Garth, asked for alterations to be inado to the picket fence in front of the grand stand on the Camp Reserve, also for permission to top dress the running track. —Referred to a committee with power to act. Mrs. E. Jones applied for a refund of 10 per cent, penalty on rates. —Applicant to be informed that the Council had no power to comply. Miss Jenkins (librarian for a number of years) tendered her resignation, and thanked the Council for the courtesy and consideration always shown her, ajid asked ft<r holiday leave.—The resignation was .accepted with regret, the Library Committee being empowered to deal with applications for tiie position. After some discussion, it was decided to grant Miss Jenkins a fortnight's holiday by way of bonus.
Councillor Blair, on behalf of the Electric Light Committee, reported that the plant, etc,, ut the Power House were in a shocking condition, and that the present engineer had signified his willingness to carry on a* best he could. Councillor Ogle mentioned that the new engineer. had told him that no tools were to be found on the place.—lt was decided, that the Town Clerk make up a return of all tools bought during th>: last twelve months.
Mr, Pigott, .olectri.ml engineer, reported suggesting that a pe'.ron wheel, which wan not at pvcseir, in use, ]>?. utilised for the purpose of tanning the generators. In the course ot a discussion relative to abuses by customers of flat rate for electric current the Mayor remarked that if they could get meters it would be policy to cut ojt the fiat rate altogether.
The question of long overdue and unpaid rates owing by natives was considered, and it was decided that certain small amounts be written off and otheis placed in the hands of the Council's solicitors for collection.
The clerk stated that the O/D stood at £3,441).
The. Council then sat as the Domain Board to consider a letter from the Minister relative to the leasing of the Camp reserve for tennis courts, wherein it was (suggested that the board undertake to provide and control same, but the Mayor pointed out they were not in a position to do so. It was resolved that Councillor Ogle and the clerk draft a letter to the Minister explaining the position. DRUIDS DANCE. The first of a series of dances, under the auspices of the Clifton Lodge of Druids, was held in the Clifton Hall on Wednesday evening, when there were about 40 couples present, who spent an enjoyable evening. Messrs L Feek and J. Taylor provided the music, extras being played by Mr. Gordon Fraser and Miss G. Skelton. The M.C.'s were Messrs W. Spinder and Leo Sampson. The proceeds of dances go towards the Honors Board fund for those who fought, in the war.
