TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs. H. Trimble-, A. Lees, F. Hoikin, P. ,T. White, H. J. Eaves and H. 11. Grayling. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. Masters and Smith. In tho absence of tho chairman (Mr. K. Masters, M.P.) Mir. mute was voted to the chair. TEACHERS' MOVEMENTS. Mr. Adlam be appointed temporary 2nd assistant in the secondary department, and Miss Clemow to take his place as temporary 4th assistant on the primary staff. TRUANT OFFICER'S KEPOttT. The truant officer (Mr. G. Pascoe) reported that 28 schools bad. sent in returns for February. Of these Ave report children absent through sickness. Seventeen notices had been sent to parents for their children's irre"ular attendance. Tim following schools hare been visited, the attendance In each case being good: Franklcy, Westown, Hurford. Koru, Oakum. Tataraimaka, TTrenni and Waitara. Omata. was visited on the 3rd Inst, and it was found half the children were absent through sickness. ARCHITECT'S REPORT. The architect (Mr. C. H. Moore) submitted the following report:— New Work—Tawhlti: This worlc is far enough advanced to enable the school to bo occupied. The latrines., septic tank and entrance gates have yet to be completed. Oeo: The addition to this school was competed and readv for occupation last week. Opunake: Plant and material are being erect : cd on the site. Owing to weather anti other conditions it will be early next week before work is in full swing.

Repairs.—Sundry repairs, etc , had been effected at Mangahume, Hurforrt Road, Midhirst, Huiros, Wiiareroa,. and Mokoia. Matu and Kaimata will receive attention in the course of a day or two. General.—All the material for the Marakepa new school has been sent to Waitara ready for shipment Material has also been sent to Te Wera for the Huiakama School to renew the out offices, 2 large gates, one small gate and sundry materials for repairs and other improvements. The committee will find the If.bor and most of the worl; . For the Manaia temporary accommodation a considerable number of second-hand desks, extra blackboards and apparatus have been supplied. DEPUTATION FROM FITZROY. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. H. Grover, F. Duckworth, and It. L. Parkin, waited on tho Board to urge the necessity of'the, early enlargement of the Fltzroy building. After showing the number of scholars in attendance in excess of the accommodation provided, a scheme was suggested for acquiring certain land In tho vicinity with a. view to the building of a new school, leaving the present building for use as an Infant department. The deputation also mentioned the matter of a subsidy on the £O3 raised at the last school carnival in aid of the improvements to the school grounds. A plan of the proposed improvements was submitted to tho Board to forward to the Department. The chairman assured the deputation that the Board was thoroughly in accord with the committee in any effort made for the improvement of tho conditions at the Fitzroy School. The Eoard resolved to ask Messrs White and Trimble to confer with the senior inspector on the question of tho alleged overcrowding at the school, and it was resolved to take such steps as were considered necessary in regard to tho acquiring of the additions suggested.

GENERAL. The appointment of Mr. C. W. Old as a j member of the Frankley Committee in place ( of Mr. Hooker (resigned) was confirmed. ' The action of the following committees in I closing the schools on account of influenza was cdnftrmed: Kaponga, Tav.hiti, Rahotu, Matapu, Rotokare, Hawera. Motonui, Mangahume, Opunake, and Tokaora. Matters In regard to repairs to buildings and provision of equipment at the following tchools were referred to the architect:— Nguere, Ohangai, Tuna, West End and Moeatoa. The architect was asked to report on the coat of furnishing a teachers' room at tho West End School. A gramt was authorised to tho. Tatarai-* maka Committee, on the basis of £1 for £1 up to £5, towards the cost of asphalting the school grounds. The question of fencing a portion of the Matlore School grounds for the purpose of providing a horse paddock was referred to the chairman and Mr. Trimble. It wan decided to inform tiie Moeatoa Committee tHat falling a. suitable school building being obtained tho BoaTd will moke a grant of £lO towards the erection of a buildfpg on a site to bo approved by the Board Messrs. Hoskin and White were appointed to meet the Hillsborough Committee in reference to selecting a site for the new residence, which the Board would have erected as soon as possible. , A letter was received from the Ngaere Committee supporting the Board's attitude tn regard to the necessity for the erection or a new school residence, and it was resolved to send a copy of the Committee's letter to the Department. A notification was received from tut Department to tho effect that it could no! entertain a proposal for expending: £107.' or alternatively f.VZ'SO) for a teacher's residence at Puugarehu.

The Department notified that the Minister of Lands had approved of the setting asido of four acres fronting Pioneer Street, lloturoa, as a school site. The mailer of a grant for the erection of a school would receive consideration. The application for additions to the Puntho school was declined by the Department, who considered the conditions did not warrant the permanent addition of two class rooms.

Notico was receive! 1 , of a grant to cover the cost of alterations at the Inglewood school.

It was resolved that the Board should inform tho Deniirtment that it would undertake the erection of tho Hawera Technical High School building, but that the Department woujd be expeceted to provide cxrra grants should the cost of the work be greater than estimated and exceed the grants already authorised. A discussion took place over the arrangements for getting school children to tno various centres to be visited by the Prince of Wales. It was finally resolved tiial cram arrangements be left In tho bands ot the chairman and Mr Smith, and that tho following meoifbers be appointed to act with the local committees at the different centres. New Plymouth, Jlessrs Smith, Grayling. Hoskin, and White; Inglcwood, Mr. Trimble; Stratford, Mr. Masters; Hawera and Eltham, Messrs Lees and Eaves. Tho teachers are to bo instructed to co-operate with the local committees on the lines laid down in the Departmental circulars.
