TROTTING. TARANAKI CLUB CONGRATULATED. SUPPORT FOR "TOTE" PERMIT. Christchurch, Last Night. At a meeting of the Board of tho New Zealand Trotting Association, the programme for the Forbury winter meeting was approved, but the club's attention was drawn to the proximity of the date of the Ashburton meetiug. It was decided to congratulate the Taranakl Trotting Club on the success of' Its Maugural meeting, ami support Its claim for a totallsator permit. In connection with tho disqualification of I' , hy the Timaru Trotting Club for obviously pulling Theseus, and his appeil, it was decided to ask for a full report; also whether the sentence Imposed was sufficient for such an offence. The Board decided to accept as satisfactory the explanation of the owner, R. J. Stone, and the trainer W. Warren, regarding the scratching of Gleaming at the Forbury meeting.

When a very large dividend was being paid at the races at Wangannl (says tho Wanginul Herald) a local resident was Just approaching the window for his "little bit" when he waa accosted at the side of the barrier by a decent looking man who said: "Say, get ralno tool" As an apparent bona fide of his request he passed over his ticket, and, without looking at It, the "dlvvv" receiver In turn handed It In, with his own, to the payee. The latter Immediately questioned a r *?i t0 p!Ly out on thß stranger's ticket, and said the one presented was not entitled to a dividend. The local resident Immediately tore It up, and after receiving his own reward he passed out of the queue. In a few moments he was again accosted by the •stunner" and was asked If he had got the money. He explained what had happened nt the window, whereupon the visitor became apparently indignant, and called two others and asked them about the ticket. They confirmed the story that the ticket given was a genuine one, and threatened the local man. As the latter had torn up and thrown away the "fake," and being one of the practical kind, ho simply paid over his own dividend. Ho Is now kicking himself that he was not more careful In preserving the ticket and handing the man over to the police. The Waverley Racing Club have accepted a tender at £II,OOO for the erection of a grandstand of concrete reinforced with steel. The stand, to be completed In time for the meeting In October next, will have seating accommodation for eighteen hundred, whilst the steps will carry a further three thousand ssople.
