BUTTER AND CHEESE.
_ CONTINUANCE OR REQUISITION ? . MARKET PROSPECTS. ' A cable message was published with the authority of the Press Association on Thursday morning to the effect that it is the general opinion in well-in-formed circles in Melbourne that it is the intention of the Imperial Government to continue the butter and cheese requisition for another two years, within which period the Imperial Government will be the only importer of these products into Great Britain. This statement was referred to Mr. Masscy, and he offered the following comment upon it:—"l have no information to enable mo to form an opinion as to whether the Imperial Government, intends to continue the requisition of butter and cheese after June HO next." The Melbourne opinion is not generally supported in New Zealand, but mi one knows the mind of the new Food Ministry, in Britain (says the Dominion). There are most doubts about cheese. It will be remembered that cheese was most urgently required by the. Imperial Government, and cheese was taken from New Zealand often' lo the exclusion of butter, the reason being that cheese was useful as an Army ration and was needed for such use. This need has pawed, and there is a fear, not yet seriously entertained that the demand for cheese will not be so strong as it has been. There will still be a heavy demand for butter, and it may be that some of the converted factories vill have to revert next year to butter-making. The opinion generally held in regard to butter also is that the war prices may not hold for next season, but prices will undoubtedly remain high
