STRATFORD.

The crowd which visited the Ngaere Gardens on Labor Day was computed at 4000, and motor cars and vehicles stood two-deep for half-a-mile alongside the roadside. A crowd of such dimensions was not anticipated in the preparations, and there was some difficulty in providing for all who needed refreshments and the various services the proprietors provide. The necesßary work, in order that the largest crowd may be successfully dealt with, is being pushed on as quickly as possible, and provision will be made ensuring the public against any possibility of disappointment in future. The day Ws perfect, and the lake, lawns, flowers, and natural bush were never seen to greater advantage. The orchestral music and the selections on the orchestrata were greatly enjoyed, and the water chute wa9 kept going from 10.30 to 4.30. Next Sunday afternoon a musical programme -will be put on, and the items will include vocal duets, trios, and quartettes by good singersi and musicians.
Following the ceremony in connection with the new Technical High School, a conversazione was held in the evening in the Town Hall. Songs were contributed by Miss Phillips, Mrs. Maastsy, and Messrs. Walters, Coe, Mills, Sanne, and Aitken. The accompaniments were played by Messrs. J. H. Thompson and Edmundson. Music for the dance was provided by Mr. C. H. Rogers' orchestra. In the early part of the evening short addresses were delivered by Major Hine and Mr. H. Trimble.
To-morrow night (Wednesday), the returned soldiers will hold a social in the Town Hall. The social will be attended (by Colonel Mitchell, who will deliver an address.
The Harkneas foundry at Stratford has recently completed the work of cast, ing a new piston for the Kaupokonui Dairy Co.'s 40-h.p. gas engine. The piece weighed between four and five hundredweight when finished, the cylinder being rebored. The work is a credit to the foundry.
