PRICE OF SILVER.
QUESTION OF SiM&LL NOTES. By Telegraph.—Press Aisn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 26, 5.5 p.m. London, October 25. The dearness of silver has caused a revival of the rumor that it would be possible to issue notes for five > shillings and even lower values. The .price of the franc has risen above the faicc value of the coins. The Government is minting an additional ten million' francs worth of nickel coins. A prominent London bullion broker, interviewed, stated he does not anticipate an issue of small notes. Even if these "are issued it is unlikely they will have any serious effect on the- value of silver, as the high price is entirely due to the Chinese buying it. It is very uncertain how long this will last, but it will probably continue until the Chinese New Year. Any prolonged cessation of Chinese buying would cause a big fall, as large quantities of American silver would be sent to Europe instead of China. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
