CHARGE OF TREASON.
. THE CAILLAUX TRIAL. - By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 26, 5.5 p.m. Paris, October 24. President Poincare refused to reprieve Lenoir, who was shot. Caillaux's trial has begun before the Senate sitting as a High Court. He is charged with plotting against the ex--terior security of the State.—Times Service. Received Oct. 26, 11.5 p.m. Paris, October 24. There was an impressive silence ■wfhen Caillaux rose and delivered a calm and dignified speech in which he declared that the accusations revolted his conscience. During tventy years of public life his only thought was his country's good. He was now ready to vindicate his conception of France as a pattern for young democracies, and he was also ready to refute the testimony of swindlers, adventurers and spies, who alone opposed him. The Court refused Caillaux's application for a provisional release with a view of enabling him to contest the elections, and adjourned the trial till January 14, when two-thirds of the Senate will be re-elected.—Aus.-N.Z.
