NOTICE. is hereby given that the Bell Block Co operative Dairy Company is not buying any more Calf Veils for the present season. R. PEPPERELL, Secretary. New Plymouth, October 24, 1919. POLITICAL." EGMONT ELECTORATE. MR. D. J. HUGHES RETIRES. briefly as possible, I wish to notify to the electors of Egmont that I have retired from the forthcoming election. I feel it is due to myself and those who gave me their assurance of support to give a few of my reasons for doing so. I had no intention of submitting my name to those who met as delegates at Eltham for the purpose of choosing a Liberal candidate to fight Reform for the seat. Why did I reconsider my stated intention of fighting on? It was because there was a danger of Reform winning. I was not afraid of any Liberal nominee. I am still of opinion I could beat any man the delegates could put in the field, but that would not overcome the difficulty and danger of who would top the poll. I love my country, its political destiny, and its future progression more than I do any personal aggrandisement. Times have been, and are, abnormal, and the crucial exigencies of the political barometer warrants any man sacrificing his aspirations to lower the temperature of Reform mercury. I do not want this country to come to what it 'is rapidly approaching, viz., a replica of land monopoly holders similar to the same regime which drove most of our parents from the land of their birth. I have been, and am now, not satisfied witli Liberal decadence, and my action, I hope, will stimulate the slumbering ideals and abilities of its leaders to infuse the sparks which have, so to speak, smouldered since the Seddon era. Lip service is not wanted now, lmt action is. Liberal people of Egmont and those who want this grand little country to advance, back up by every means in your power the man whom your delegates have chosen. Let no side issues which I hpd to contend with dim your objective, as Reform administration will drag this country Sownwards as it has the countries in other climes. When we get a system of proportional representation this; game of choosing candidates, which savors so much of professionalism, will disappear "and the candidates will then have what is their Tight—the platform for a friend and the people as the judge and take the verdict? as given.
