At the Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Gilkison stated that the Union Company during the wr.r had made freights payable in India, a practice that worked well for New Zealand importers, but now, owing to the high value of the rupee, the practice caused a loss with the rupee at Is 107-18 d. The loss to New Zealand merchants on a shipment of goods on the Waitomo was about £13,750. It was decided to ask the Union Company to revert to the practice of paying freights in the Dominion.
