MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE.
END OF THE SITTINGS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. The Municipal Conference concluded its sitting to-day. The .Mayor of Wellington, Mr. Win. Luke, was re-elected president, and it was decided that the vice* president and executive be the same as before. At this morning's sitting the Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Bill, introduced by Mr. Luke, was dealt with. There was some discussion on the clause proposing to give power to united boroughs to raise all rates by way of a general rate, and it was decided to recommend the insertion of a clause providing that in the matter of special loans t a poll be taken if 5 per cent, of the ratepayers, desire it. The conference approved the Bill with the addition. DEPUTATION TO MINISTERS. ' VALUE OP SUGGESTIONS RECOGNISED. Wellington, Last Nigfct. A deputation from tile Municipal Conference waited upon the Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs to-dav. The speakers indicated that the remits passed by the conference would be forwarded to the Ministers concerned, with the hope that action would be taken on the lines indicated. In reply? Mr. Massey said he had not had an opportunity of reading the remits yet, but would do so with the object of making those of which Parliament approved into legislation as soon as possible. He knew from previous experience that remits passed t>y the conferonce were usually received with approval by Parliament and the Government of the country, for they contained exceedingly valuable suggestions. 'Hon. J. B. Hine spoke briefly, Indicating that he would be glad to avail himself of the assistance offered by the conference.
