DEFENDING AUSTRALIA.

NECESSITY FOR A STRONG FLEET. By Telegraph.—Press A:.sn.—Copyright. Received August'l, 8.15 p.m. Brisbane, August 1. Lord Jellicoe, replying to a welcome at Gladstone, said that Australia meant real business in preparing to defend her shores by the establishment of naval bases. He hoped that sea-power which was absolutely vital for the future of Australia would be generally recognised. Australia offered temptations to neighbors, and, unless human nature altered, people would want to come over and take this glorious country. It would be necessary to have a strong navy, backed by the British Fleet, to stop them.
