SERIOUS RIOTS.

The police were reinforced and acted vigorously, dispersing the rioters. Unemployed soldiers made a demonstration at Manchester. RIOTERS AND POLICE CLASH. PREMIEU ASSAULTED. Melbourne, July 22. A crowd of 2000 returned soldiers and sailors uiarchoil io the Premier's office ai.n demanded tiie release of returned men arrested during the peace disturbances. The Premier attempted to address the crowd, which had been augmented by a large number of civilians, but was refused a hearing From this moment all somblance of order vanished, the crowd rushing the Treasury and wrecking the rooms One of the larrikin element entered the Premier's room and hurled nn ink well at Mr. Lawson, inflicting a severe wound on the head. Several soldiers then carried the Premier to si My. At this point a strong body of police arrived, and were met with a volley of stones. They charged and dispersed the rioters. Later a crowd of 0000 marched to tlio Russell Street police station and demanded the release of the arrested rioters. The mounted police, after being bombarded with brick-bats/charged, and after freely using their batons, dispersed the mob. Fourteen rioters and one policeman were injured. One arrest was made. The Premier recovered sufficiently to attend a special meeting of the Federal Cabinet, at which the position was discussed. At the City Court a number of Saturday's rioters were fined. FURTHER RIOTS. Received July 23, 12.55 a.m. Melbourne, July 22. Further riots took place after the funeral of the soldier killed on Saturday. Mounted troopers dispersed the mobs with batons.
