LINKING UP CANTERBURY.
PROGRESS OF OTIRA TUNNEL. By Telegraph.—Press Association.' Wellington, May 19. In replying to a deputation of delegates of the Canterbury public bodies ■at Arthur's Pass on Saturday urging him to use his endeavors for the expedition of the work in the Otira Tiuinel, the Hon. W. D. S Macdonald, who has just completed his tour of the West Coast, gave a very sympathetic answer. He had been greatly impressed with the possibilities of Westland, both in regard to agricultural and pastoral pursuits, and the mining industry, and he said that the linking up of Canterbury with Westland by railway would add materially to the progress of both provinces. Personally, considering the amount of expenditure, which was earning practically no interest in connection with the tunnel work, he did not think any other work was so important to complete.
