SUPERFICIAL QUIETUDE. Received May 2, 1.20 a.m. Cairo, April 21. The Times correspondent learns from reliable sources that the appearance of restored quietude is only superficial. The provincial natives at present seem to submit, but outbreaks will recur immediately if troops are withdrawn. Cairo serves as a nerve centre of the agitation of a clique of lawyers, students and Azharites, who inspire and direct the ferment over the whole country. Motorcycling agents are sent out, and a succession of troubles mark their trail everywhere. Only fifteen per cent, of the native officials .have resumed work in Cairo. The secret intimidation of the remainder persists, despite the warning. The Government still delays the threatened drastic action, which is obviously unavoidable.—Times Service.
