Several newspapers urge that hundreds who are now idle should be used on the most affected routes. Owners of private cars are alßo invited to assist, I'll# picture papers are full of photographs of unprecedented scenes. Pedestrians have uever been more numerous on Waterloo, Westminster and London bridge;. Bicycles are largely used, and omnibuses queues are formed everywhere, the Hammersmith queue being a milp long for peveral hours, There have been comparatively few accidents, but some women faited a 6-1 others were hurt in scrambling on k u trams and buses, while some collapsed from exhaustion caused by long walks. London is deserted at night, and the theatres have suffered heavily. Many of the leading hotels and restaurants, where their own staff being on strike aggravated the situation, are practically empty,—Aut.-NZ. Cable Assoc. SITUATION MOST SERIOUS. ' ELECTRICIANS AND ENGINEERS WILL STRIKE, PREPARING FOR EMERGENCIES. Received 7, 7-35 o,in. London, Feb. 0. The strike situation is most serious. It is understood that 10,000 electricians and 200,000 engineers will strike tonight in defiance of the Government. Received 7, 8.25 p.m. London, Feb. 0 The Government has ordered, the immediate mobilisation of military motor lorries with drivers, placing the vehicles on the ain streets of London for the conveyance of city workers, giving preference to women and girls.—Aus.-NZ. The Government has fully arranged to carry on the works with military protection if necessary.
