CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE
HOUSES UNDER WATER.
By Telegraph.—Press Association Duncdin, Last Night ' In connection with the floods in tha south the position has improved. At ' lialelutha, the Molvneux has fallen two feel; eight inches. 'The bank is holdingwell, and danger is now considered to ho past. Bnrnego is completely inundated, Some ' Sheep have been lost, and the grRSg pad* docks have been spoilt by silt. At Stir* ling the water is subsiding very slowly, and the outlook is not much improved. \ Stock losses are small 1
Kaitangata Flats, from Lovell's Flat to j the sea, is under water, and extensive damage has been done. Seventy homes ' arc flooded, and provisions are being sup- i plied by bqat to several settle™. The j flood water is 18 inches below the 1878 1 maik. The stock of butter an,l flour is almost exhausted. The eoal miners ara idle, Ihe mail service has been main- I tained by boat from Lovell's Flat. Soy- 1 elal families arc marooned, and rescue work is proceeding by boat. There has ' been no loss of life. The water is rislne slowly. 6
The Minister of Lands visited Stirling district to-day and got some idea, of ths 1 loss sustained bv the residgtiU Hft recognised that the damage is serious, 1 both at Stirling and Kaitangata.
