HIGHER EDUCATION.

FOR SOLDIERS' CHILDREN. WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP. At a meeting of the War Relief Association some .months ago Mr. E. W. Atkinson (North Taranaki) brought up a suggestion from the Board of Governors of the New Plymouth High School that the War Relief Association should found scholarships or bursaries for the benefit of children whose fathers had gone to the front. The proposal was discussed in August and received very favorably by the delegates. A report was later on brought forward, but doubt was expressed as to whether the powers of the association were wide enough to permit this assistance, and the matter was again adjourned. Owing to the epidemic the association aid not meet in November, but at Wednesday's meeting the matter was again reviewed and the rules amended, and these will be submitted to the Minister administering war funds.

Mr. Atkinson stated they desired to help the promising child (boy or girl) of any soldier. As things were, it was passible a child may have had two years' extra schooling and required a third to qualify for matriculation, but the parents may be unable to spare the necessary funds to allow the .further preparation. The Board of Governors were giving the association's scholars a big rebate on the usual price, £24 as against £4O. The High School was the only .school with lodging in Taranaki. He was sorry the postponement made the matter of publicity of these scholarships rather late, as some parents may have made other arrangements. He dosired it to be understood that the scholarships would be available for pupils from technical or other schools in the Taranaki provincial district. Particulars relating to the various conditions can be obtained from the secretary of the War Relief Association and also the Patriotic Committees.
