The usual monthly meeting of the Hospital Hoard was held to-dtiv. Present;: Messrs .1. McAllister, C. D. Sofe, R. McK. Morison, 15. W. Hancock, F. Macknv and 10. Walter.

Br. Steven. medical superintendent, reported tlint during December 2(i patients were admitted. 20 discharged, and one died, 2t remaining at the end of the month. Six operations were performed undev anaesthetics. Five cases are in the isolation ward. Miss Griffin had completed her probationary period, and lie recommended that she be taken on the staff. Miss Beedle, the new matron, took charge on December ft.—Report received, and Miss Griffin placed on permanent staff.

The matron Teported that the laundress should be engaged four days a week in future.—Granted.

Nurse A. Old, Whangamomona Medical Association, reported that during Be cember she had attended four cases.—Re eeived

A. Gray, health inspector, reported S cases of diphtheria, six in the Stratford County and two in the borough. All patients bad been removed to the hospital, and premises disinfected —Received E. Chapman, matron Salvation lAnnv Hoys' Home, Russell, thanked the board for donation to the home. A Whittakcr, matron Girls' Home, Wellington, <ilsii thanked the board for donation.—Received.

Dr. Valiutine, Inspector-General oE Hospitals, wrote that he intended during his visit to Stratford to have interviewed the chairman, but during his stey in Stratford a bereavement in his family linuie the visit very brief. He had no desire to be discourteous, and he hoped in lmve another opportunity of visiting the district.—Received.

The secretary submitted a list of payments, etc., received during the year, totalling £3200 2s, against £27s!)'last year. The principal revenue was from local bodies' contributions, £lll4 i4s, the same funds totalling £B7O 8s last year, GENERAL.

Those returning soldiers arriving last night were Privates Willis, MeCraeken, Franklyn, Beane and Hall. The latter was a cot case, but, through some misunderstanding, there was no suitable conveyance available when the mail train arrived. Mr. C. D. Sole, a member of the board, and a keen worker in patriotic matters, was present, and soon had arrangements complete for the soldier's removal to the hospital. At the board's meeting to-dny, Mr. Sole and others touched on the matter, and a motion was carried instructing the secretary to request the Defence Department to give more particulars of men arriving, so that there need be no delay in removals. Farmers are all agreed that hay crops are 1 light this year. Out Douglas way the season so far has proved very satisfactory, the milking yields of the various herds being well up to previous years.

At the Hospital Board meeting this morning, the chairman (Mr. .J. McAllister) welcomed the new members of the board —Messrs F. Mackay and E. Hancock, and congratulated Mr. Walter on his elevation to the chairmanship of the County Council. All the members reciprocated the chairman's kind sentiments.

Mr. A. D. Stanley, secretary of the A. and P. Association, lias returned from his holidays. Most of the time was spent at Rotoma.

There was a large gathering at the station to-night to welcome Sergeant F. H. Masters, of the Main Body, on his return to Stratford, after over three years' service. Sergeant Masters, who has been awarded the Military Medal, is to spend three weeks on furlough without pay, and then report at camp.

BOWLING. Five rinks arc expected to meet the Stratford Club, on the latter's green, on Thursday, play commencing at 2.30 p.m. Efforts are being made to get two rinks from the Klthain Club to also attend, so that there should b«? a full green. The players to represent Stratford Club will appear in Thursday's issue.

The business done in Stratford during Christmas week was quite up to expectations. There was a good run on the jewellery store of Mr. C. E. Jam'. l * and this was not surprising, seeing the great variety and excellent value he was oilering. It is some years since Mr. .lames opened business here, and his thorough study of the district's requirements is perhaps the secret of his success—plug good value in every article.*

December, 1017, will soon be only a memory. There is, however, an opportunity still to take advantage of the great range of artistic jewellery, brooches, and bangles, that Mr. Ben. •J.
